This is a list of common nicknames and other personname variations. This page is for listing variant names that show up in credits or at least could, but aren't meant to be anything different than normal. This is so redundant variant names are not listed on any page.
Before changing the common nickname lists, read and follow all the rules in the first section down.
Page rules
Only nicknames based on the nicknamed person's pre-existing "full name" belong here. This is because other nicknames are impossible to predict from only a media work's credits and other official sources. For nicknames not based on another name, use the English variant names and Non-English variant names pages.
Givennames, familynames, titles, and bynames follwing the above rules are allowed, but the obvious focus is givennames. Nicknames of "another" nickname are also okay if they follow all the rules above. Just keep in mind some people are named by an ostensible nickname, and many regular nicknames can be used a nickname.
- Example of a nickname being used formally: actor Dick Gautier had "Dick" on his birth certificate, and never called himself "Richard" in his whole life.
- Example of regular names being used as nicknames: "Dan" is from both the Hebrew for 'to judge' and a shortening of the also-Hebrew "Daniel" meaning 'God's my judge'; alongside many other sources of "Dan".
Predictable nickames used for more than one regular name must put a short explanation of the kind of names the nickname is used for in the "regular name" column; not any of the regular names said nickname is used for.
The lists are split by language; starting with the language of the wiki's version (in this case, English), and then all other languages in alphabetical order. The language split is based on names and nicknames used by a specific language's speakers, not what language a name or nickname came from. Etymology is irrelevant to all of the rules for this page.
Lastly, keep in mind these common errors:
- No predictable nicknames belonging to only one specific person. Use the "variant names" pages until another person gets the nickname.
- No more than the three most common spelling/ pronunciation variants per name.
- But, unpredictable spelling/ pronunciation variants can be added, even if there are already three spelling variants.
- No nicknames for groups, media works, and fictional characters. Put those on both pages for the page the of whatever/whoever has the nickname and the variant name pages.
- No listing more than one different regular name that a specific nickname refers to. Instead, briefly explain what kind of names the nickname refers to.
